Recycled Beams
Most of the timber frames built by Earthwood Homes are made of dry and
stable Douglas Fir beams salvaged from old structures such as
sawmills,
military storage buildings, docks, piers, trestles or even agricultural granaries. It is more costly to dismantle
structures carefully so as not to damage the wood. However, below the abused
surfaces of these beams is precious material with rich and beautiful grain
patterns. The clear Danish oils we typically apply to the beams in our shop
help bring out the wood's warm natural patina.
Earthwood Homes purchases reclaimed beams from specialty salvage companies
by the truckload.

All the metal must be removed and the beams pressure
washed before going to our band saw sawmill and timber planer.
Maintaining
our own timber inventory, sawmill and beam planer allows us greater
flexibility in producing unique custom timbers. Our master sawyer, Derwyn
Hanney, is intimately familiar with the frames we build, and can produce
beams that perfectly match their intended application. We think this is good
for our customers, and appropriate for the valuable resource we have been
entrusted with to use wisely.
Custom Milling
In addition to providing quality timber
for our timber frame structures, Earthwood Homes can produce timber orders
custom sawn to your specifications. Often we are called upon to supply a
visually dramatic structural ridge beam to substitute for a glue-lam beam.
Due to the specialized nature of the recycled timber market and our busy
schedule, most orders over 1,000 board feet require at least eight to ten
weeks to produce. Surfacing options for all our beams include: planed
smooth, rough sawn, hand hewn, power hewn, weathered texture, or wire
brushed.
Mantles
Earthwood Homes excels at providing customers with high-grade mantle stock,
or individually selected mantle pieces that have unique character elements
and grain configurations.
Engineered Trusses
Sometimes due to budget constraints or architectural preferences, we are
called upon to construct timber trusses to be used in conventionally built
homes or businesses.
These projects are a refreshing diversion from
our big frame jobs, as they usually require less intense mental calisthenics
to get the job done right. We have built trusses with internal metal flitch
plates but much prefer to design, engineer and fabricate structural trusses
using good old-fashioned mortise and tenon joinery. Often a single steel rod
buried in the collar tie with hidden harnesses on the backsides of the
rafters will satisfy engineering requirements.
We also work closely with our talented
neighbor, Jeff Western, of Ponderosa Forge, if exposed ornamental ironwork is
specified.
If you are seriously considering timber trusses, it is a good idea to have
your architect or designer consult with us well before your construction
plans are finalized.
