Designer’s Comments: This was a most enjoyable project. One of the best rewards came early in the process… The homeowners said that a prime reason for choosing the Rosenquist Design / Earthwood Homes Team was their strong impression that we enjoyed what we do with great “enthusiasm”. What a nice way to begin such a highly rewarding endeavor.

During our first design meeting, the homeowners presented us with a set of thoughtfully developed preliminary floor plans. And while the general arrangement of living spaces was maintained… through interaction of designer, homeowners, timber framer and feedback from the home itself, the details of the layout and finishes experienced dramatic shifts.

Delightful surprises developed as a result of relocating the fireplace from a great room wall to a more central location. While the initial reasoning was to give more space for a built-in entertainment center, the unforeseen effects were actually much more exciting. We now had a “walk-around” fireplace centered at the entry to the great room. On the lower floor, the short hall behind the fireplace provides access from the Foyer to the Kitchen without passing through the Great Room and privacy for the Powder Room. The most enjoyable result was the addition of a private den space, which is partially hidden behind the brick chimney on the upper floor.

When deciding on the placement of the home, the homeowners’ were sensitive to the existing vegetation, removing only what was necessary from their secluded, heavily wooded site and the moderate slope gave us plenty of height to include a daylight basement capped with a dramatic timber framed covered deck.

The intermingling of flat and vaulted ceilings reflects what we feel to be highly effective way to enhance the personal touches of a timber frame structure. The upper floor reveals the struggle between designing in shorter wall plates against the requirements we had for usable space. The resulting lower proportions add to the intimacy within the upper level.

Special care was taken to incorporate doors and finish trim material that the homeowners had procured from a 1930’s catholic girls school building. An unusual six-foot round cloister window was placed as the centerpiece on the great room gable end wall. From the bead-board paneling in the master bedroom ceiling to the dropped pendant stair posts, the owner’s personal touches and efforts to reuse historically precious material are tastefully evident throughout the home.
